This is a tour of coastal Queensland from Cairns to Brisbane by Queensland Railway's 2000 class heritage railmotor. The train will be chartered exclusively by Insights Tours and the tour will include comprehensive sightseeing and guided visits of Reef Headquarters at Townsville, Tully Sugar Mill, a dinner cruise on the Fitzroy River at Rockhampton and a private ranger guided tour of Fraser Island. From Cairns day excursions will include the Daintree River and rainforest in the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area and the Atherton Tablelands. 

  • DAY 1 Friday 20th July Cairns (D) 

Arrive Cairns. Welcome drink then dinner at The Hotel Cairns.

  •  DAY 2 Saturday 21st July Atherton Tableland (B,L,D) 

Day excursion to the Atherton tableland. We will have a specially reserved carriage on the Kuranda Scenic Railway train on its spectacular journey as it passes through World Heritage protected tropical rainforest, past spectacular waterfalls and into the awesome Barron Gorge. Visit the famous Kuranda Heritage Markets with its various artisans. Then to Jacques Coffee Plantation where we have a guided tour of this award winning coffee production facility. 

This afternoon we'll tour the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary before boarding the 7.5km Skyrail gondola cableway for the descent through the coastal rainforest. This evening we dine at the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Centre with a performance by the world famous Tjapukai dancers.

  • DAY 3 Sunday 22nd July Daintree Rainforest (B, L) 

Day excursion to the Wet Tropics World Heritage area situated north of the Daintree River. At the Daintree Discovery Centre we will have a naturalist guided walk through the rainforest utilising their mid canopy aerial walkway, canopy tower and 400 metres of elevated boardwalks. In addition, our visit includes the interpretive display centre and an audio visual presentation. This afternoon we have a chartered cruise on the Daintree River.

  • DAY 4 Monday 23rd July Cairns to Townsville (B,L,D) 

Morning departure aboard the railmotor for Tully where we inspect the sugar mill then at Cardwell a short coach excursion to the lookout for views over Hinchinbrook Island and Passage. Late afternoon arrival at Townsville where we visit Castle Hill for sunset views.

  • DAY 5 Tuesday 24th July Townsville to Mackay (B,L,D)

Morning guided visit to the Reef Headquarters Aquarium, the Great Barrier Reef Authority's award winning education centre and the world's largest living coral reef aquarium with 130 species of coral and 120 species of the fish of the Great Barrier Reef. Late morning join the railmotor for the journey to Mackay passing through sugar growing towns of Ayr, Home Hill and Proserpine.

  • DAY 6 Wednesday 25th July Mackay to Rockhampton (B,L,D)

Morning city tour of Mackay before travelling to Sarina to join our train. As we journey south lunch will be taken at the bush pub at St Lawrence. At Rockhampton we will have a city tour before a sunset dinner cruise on the Fitzroy River with views of the heritage buildings along the riverfront Quay Street which is listed as an historic streetscape.

  • DAY 7 Thursday 26th July Rockhampton to Maryborough (B,L,D)

Half day railmotor travel to Bundaberg. As we pass through the Gladstone district we will see the huge railway network for the haulage of central Queensland coal. At Bundaberg, a city tour and inspection of the Bundaberg Rum Distillery. Then to Maryborough for a city tour and a 2 night stay.

  • DAY 8 Friday 27th July Fraser Island (B,L,D)

Full day ranger guided tour to World Heritage Listed Fraser Island, the world's largest sand island with an area of 184,000 hectares. Fraser Island is a place of exceptional beauty with its long uninterrupted white beaches flanked by strikingly coloured sand cliffs, over 100 freshwater lakes- some tea coloured, others clear and some blue - all ringed by white sandy beaches and immense sand dunes which can reach up to 240 metres above sea level. We will also see the wreck of the Maheno, the crystal clear creeks and the tall ancient rainforest -the only place in the world where rainforest grows on sand dunes above 200 m elevation. 

  • DAY 9 Saturday 28th July Maryborough to Brisbane (B,L,D)

Morning railmotor journey to Yandina to visit Buderim Ginger for guided tour of the plantation and production facility. Then to Nambour to visit the The BigPineapple for lunch and tour of the tropical fruit plantation including a ride on the Cane Train. We arrive Brisbane in the late afternoon. Accommodation is at the Holiday Inn situated above Roma Street station.

  • DAY 10 Sunday 29th July Brisbane (B)

Following breakfast the tour ends. The Holiday Inn is very convenient for departures by train to Sydney or to any place in Queensland including Brisbane Airport. In addition, Insights Tours is offering a 2 day coach journey from Brisbane to Thirroul, the "Institute Limited".

    The cost of this tour is $3,525
    The cost includes: 

1. all transportation
2. all sightseeing excursions as indicated
3. accommodation on twin share basis
4. all entrance fees
5. guided touring as specified in itinerary
6. meals as specified in the itinerary
7. all gratuities
8. services of Insights Tours escort throughout the tour

The additional costs are: drinks, unspecified meals and items of a personal nature.

Places on the tour require a $500 deposit.
Balance of $3,025 to be remitted by Monday 21st May, 2007.

Refunds for cancellations will be less any cancellation fees imposed by third parties.

It is recommended that insurance cover be obtained. Insights Tours can assist you to obtain insurance.

Railmotor
The railmotor is owned and operated by the heritage division of Queensland Rail. It was built in the 1960's to convey up to 104 passengers over medium distances. It affordsexcellent visibility, and comfortable and commodious seating. Although not airconditioned it is toilet equipped and a drivers eye view is available from the forward seats.

Coach
Insights Tours will be engaging Illawarra Escape Tours to provide a 46 seat coach which is airconditioned, toilet equipped and has well spaced seating. The coach will be used for transfers, city tours and day excursions from Cairns. The Fraser Island tour will be in a specially modified coach.

Accommodation
All accommodation is of at least a 3 star standard.
The cost of the tour is based on twin share ensuite accommodation.
Limited single accommodation is available throughout the tour for an additional total cost of $455.

Luggage
There will be no porterage of luggage however assistance with loading and unloading will be available. Please limit your luggage to 1 suitcase and 1 piece of hand luggage per person.
