North by West tour Friday 13th July to Friday 20th July, 2007 (fully booked)

This tour travels by chartered coach from Thirroul to Cairns via an interesting inland route. It includes visits to Coonabarabran, Moree, Carnarvon Gorge, historic Charters Towers, Myall Park Botanic Gardens and Undara Lava Tubes. The tour complements the Insights Tours' Coastal Queensland Railmotor tour during which the coastal districts between Cairns and Brisbane will be explored.

  • DAY 1 Friday 13th July Thirroul to Coolah

Morning departure crossing the Blue Mountains to Lithgow where we visit the Small Arms Factory Museum. After lunch cross the Great Dividing Range enroute to Gulgong where we have a guided tour of the historic Opera House. We then drive to Coolah for overnight.

  •  DAY 2 Saturday 14th July Coolah to Goondiwindi

Morning travel to Coonabarabran to inspect Newcastle Hats production facility and Crystal Kingdom. Lunch at Narrabri then to Moree which is famous for its natural and therapeutic artesian spas. Opportunity for a spa bath. Afternoon travel to Goondiwindi and see the colonial era Customs House.

  • DAY 3 Sunday 15th July Goondiwindi to Carnarvon Gorge

Morning drive to Myall Park Botanic Garden for a guided tour, home of the Lindsay Gordon grevillea. At Roma we visit Romavilla winery, oldest winery in Queensland dating from 1880. Afternoon drive to Carnarvon Gorge National Park where we arrive late afternoon for a 2 night stay.

  • DAY 4 Monday 16th July Carnarvon Gorge

Carnarvon Gorge has been described as a 'tangle of peaks, gorges, and sandstone cliffs, it is one of the wildest regions of ... Queensland'. The caves and cliff walls were a popular place for Aboriginal art and contain some of the finest examples of hands, axes, emu tracks and boomerangs to be seen anywhere in Australia.
A day of ranger guided walking of the scenic highlights of the gorge including Moss Garden, The Amphitheatre and The Art Gallery. For those who prefer less walking there will be an option of joining the morning walk to Moss Garden then returning to the lodge for lunch.

  • DAY 5 Tuesday 17th July Carnarvon Gorge to Clermont

Morning travel to Emerald. See the Railway Station with its unusual architecture and the Railway Wagon Murals. An early afternoon arrival at Clermont. The footpath and boardwalk around Hoods Lagoon offers the opportunity of a self guided insight into the human history of Clermont. There are such things as the Sister Mary McKillop grotto, Billy Sing Memorial, Aboriginal Monument and the War Memorial as well as various other memorials depicting the life and history of the town.

  • DAY 6 Wednesday 18th July Clermont to Charters Towers

This morning we travel the outback Gregory Developmental Road with a mid morning refreshment stop before arriving in Charters Towers for lunch. This afternoon we have a guided tour of this historical and interesting town which dates from 1872 when gold was first discovered. Charters Towers became the most productive gold town ion Queensland and at its peak had a population of 30000, 90 hotels and many prominent buildings including a stock exchange - many of which still stand and which we will see. Our visit will include the Ghosts and Gold Heritage Trail, the Assay Room, Venus Battery and the Mining Museum.

  • DAY 7 Thursday 19th July Charters Towers to Mt Surprise

Morning drive to Greenvale for refreshments. Then via The Lynd to Mt Surprise for lunch. Later in the afternoon we will have a guided tour of Mt Surprise and visit the Gem Shop where faceting of the local gemstones is performed. We will end the day with a relaxed BBQ dinner.
Accom: Bedrock Village Caravan Park (ensuite units)

  • DAY 8 Friday 20th July Mt Surprise to Cairns

Visit the Undara Lava Tubes. Discover this fascinating underground geological phenomenon, enjoy home-style refreshments, climb a rocky bluff to get an above ground perspective and learn more about the region's geology and ecology. Travel via Ravenshoe then descend to the coast at Gordonvale before arriving in Cairns late afternoon. Tour ends at the Hotel Cairns.

    The cost of this tour is $2000

The additional costs are: drinks and items of a personal nature.

Places on the tour require a $500 deposit.
Balance of $1500 to be remitted by Monday 21st May, 2007.

Refunds for cancellations will be less any cancellation fees imposed by third parties.

It is recommended that insurance cover be obtained. Insights Tours can assist you to obtain insurance.

Coach
Insights Tours will be engaging Illawarra Escape Tours to provide a 46 seat coach which is airconditioned, toilet equipped and has well spaced seating.

Accommodation
All accommodation is of at least a 3 star standard.
The cost of the tour is based on twin share ensuite accommodation.
Limited single accommodation is available for an additional cost of $385.

Luggage
There will be no porterage of luggage however assistance with loading and unloading will be available. Please limit your luggage to 1 suitcase and 1 piece of hand luggage per person.
